Two Day Workshop

This class is for anyone who has trouble mixing the right colors for their paintings as well as those who want to understand much more about how an artist has to think while they are painting. There will be great explanations for things you have not yet learned.

We will explore many theories relating to mixing color according to how we see (scientifically) using the color wheel, lighting (and shadow) temperature, understanding how and when color bounces or influences the subject near, color mixing, when and how to define the temperature of the color, how to paint from still life, the elements of shadow, color compliments, color transitions, and color terms.

The participants will gain skills in visually seeing three-dimension and translating it into a two-dimensional surface, in color mixing confidently, knowledge of how to create the best color balance between shadow and light, better compositions, and knowledge of the importance of use for gray and brown. They will also learn many valuable other basic tools as to overall value and ways to make a painting far better than they previously painted.

The activities that the participants will experience: Creation of a reusable color wheel with graphs of primary color mixtures, tint mixtures, gray and brown mixtures, and transition maps for both primary and secondary colors. During our workshop I will demonstrate while I lecture on the different subjects involved in color theory. I will then have the students apply their newly learned concepts to a still life they will be painting from objects or fruit and vegetables set up in still life arrangements in the room.

For Artists of All Skill Levels

With Bobbi Baldwin

DATE: July 18 & 19, 2015 - Saturday & Sunday

TIME: 9am-4pm

During this workshop you will learn new techniques for:

This class is designed to teach a full range of techniques on  painting all animals.  We will focus on horses, dogs, and the animals which you are most interested in.  I will give demonstrations to help you learn as well as lectures, and lead you through the painting of your choice.   We will practice painting eyes and work on your own personal choice of subjects from your own photo.

--Other subjects to be covered will be: basics on composition, realism, color value, color mixing,  glazing for oil painters, techniques for all mediums,  the surrounding environment shapes and surfaces, how to make your subject charismatic, and the mythology of your subject matter.

As an art educator in her 30th year of teaching, this artist has taught artists from all over the world.  Bobbi started out as a portrait artist in 1982 and still enjoys painting portraits for her many clients.  As a founding member of the Portrait Society of America, her education is strong from the greatest living painters.  The Portrait Painterís Way, a book written by Bobbi Baldwin, is now a must have for anyone who wants to understand how to paint people (available on Amazon).  Her knowledge of people led way to the ability to capture even more muscular beings.  As you know, horses and people are the most difficult of all subjects for any artist.  But, she has proven to excel at both.

In 2012, she lost her younger brother to cancer.  While Mark was battling cancer he inspired his sister to revisit her love for horses.  He was a passionate photographer whose deepest wish was to be with them, so their time together became about going into pastures and arenas.  Many of her original paintings were done from the photos Mark took or they took together.  The heartfelt memories they created while on photo shoots were those that led her onto the path she has taken at this time.  He opened a door for her; so there came a time in her life when she returned to her love of animals as well, and found her heartís passion portraying all equine events including Polo players, Jumpers, Ropers, Dressage, and much more.  Because knowledge is passion for this artist, she seeks to paint all different breeds and share that understanding with her students.  She is a passionate teacher with a great ability to share her depth of knowledge.

Two Day Workshop

The participants will have the opportunity to paint their favorite animals during this workshop. Each student will be required to bring a photo to work from.

We will focus much on texture of hair, and how to paint facial features. There will be a long lecture and demonstration on the way that eyes, noses, ears, mouths, hair, and skin are to be thought about structurally.

This class will cover all the aspects of animal and equine painting including basic bone and muscle structure of canine, equine, and feline. We will go into great detail about the physiology and work towards thinking three-dimensionally. You will engage a different part of your mind, learning to see three dimensionally, as you produce far better work.

Bobbi takes pleasure in reaching ALL the students through many various learning techniques.

You will have the instructorís immediate feedback on the approaches you take to capture your subject. She will individually guide you as well as lead the class through the steps it takes to create a painting.

All mediums are welcome, but oils are suggested. Bobbi openly shares her 32 plus years of experience in oil glazing for the oil painters in the group. You will work with glazing techniques and knowledge of how to really make gorgeous work by letting the layers refract the light through the pigments encased in the oils (If weather and drying of paint permits where your paintings can dry.)

Lectures will also include a quick over view of color theory, composition, backgrounds.

All levels are welcome. There is always something for any level to learn from these lectures and demonstrations. Advanced ideas about color theory will be discussed, as well as the very basics. All ideas and concepts of painting will be interlaced together to make it as easy as possible for you.

Many different teaching methods including written hand outs, visual demonstrations, kinetic, auditory lectures, and including tactile references for the students to be involved beyond their own work on the canvas.
